The Maharashtra government has launched the ‘Drug-Free Mumbai’ awareness campaign to keep the youth away from addiction and the dangerous web of narcotics. Reinforcing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolve for a ‘Drug-Free India,’ this initiative by the Devendra Fadnavis government has set a goal of making Mumbai and Maharashtra completely drug-free within the next 3 to 4 years, aligning with the national ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ vision.
The ‘Drug-Free Mumbai’ Campaign to Become a Mass Movement
The youth population in India is the highest in the world and considered a major factor when it comes to achieving its development goal. Given India’s rapid rise on the world stage, drug trafficking could well be orchestrated by hostile anti-India forces to ensnare the youth in the grip of drugs in order to weaken the nation from the inside out. So, besides the intelligence-led security activities, it requires mass movements to mobilise people against drugs. With that in mind, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the ‘Drug-Free Mumbai’ campaign on July 30, 2026.

The ‘Drug-Free Mumbai’ campaign received congratulations from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the launch. Welcoming this initiative by the Maharashtra government, PM Modi stated in his letter that the campaign represents a significant step towards creating a drug-free, aware, and empowered society. The message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that substance abuse poses a serious threat to the health, safety, peace, and development of society, adversely affecting an individual’s decision-making ability, self-confidence, and life trajectory. While congratulating the Maharashtra government and Devendra Fadnavis on the campaign, PM Modi emphasized public awareness, maintaining family values, collective societal responsibility, and the concerted efforts of various institutions to create a drug-free society.
A ‘Guerrilla Poetry’ approach will help dismantle the drug mafia network
Police action and law enforcement alone are insufficient to keep the youth away from drugs. Active participation by the representatives of government departments like Health, Social Justice, and School Education, and, most importantly, from teachers, students, parents, and every segment of society are critical for the success of this campaign. The government is taking stringent measures against the drug trafficking rackets, with a specific focus on obliterating gangs that sell drugs near schools and colleges. Inspired by the concept of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s ‘Guerrilla Poetry,’ it is crucial for every citizen to assist by acting as an informant to help dismantle the entire drug mafia network. The identities of citizens who provide such assistance will be kept confidential, and these vigilant citizens will be honored with awards in the future.
‘Drug-Free Campus, Drug-Free School’
Educational institutions and students play a pivotal role in the drug-free campaign. Schools, colleges, and universities are the primary hubs for this initiative. To effectively implement the concepts of a ‘drug-free campus’ and ‘drug-free school,’ students themselves must firmly resolve to ‘say no to drugs’ and reject them without succumbing to temptation or pressure. Also important is a focused approach by the principals/headmasters-headmistresses. Generally, if young people stay free from substance abuse until the age of 21 or 22, they are more likely to remain free from these harmful habits for the rest of their lives. In this campaign, Devendra Fadnavis has taken a multi-pronged strategy including busting the drug rackets near schools/colleges, generating resistance against drugs among youth, rehabilitation of addicted ones, and reintegrating them into the mainstream.
The campaign also stresses ways to involve the youth in nation-building through creating a safe and strong society, drawing inspiration from the ideals like Swami Vivekananda, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.
