Friendship Beyond Politics: Devendra Fadnavis’s Decision Wins Maharashtra’s Heart!

Although it is said that politicians make decisions that are politically motivated, some decisions just defy this maxim, setting a rare example of prioritizing friendship over politics. Following the sudden demise of Maharashtra’s former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, a decision taken by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has become a topic of discussion and praise across the state. The Devendra Fadnavis government has decided to officially observe Ajit Pawar’s birth anniversary on July 22.

Two Public Leaders Sharing the Same Birthday

The General Administration of Government of Maharashtra issued an official order regarding this on July 15, 2026. According to the order, Ajit Pawar’s birth anniversary will be observed officially on July 22 across all state schools, colleges, and government and semi-government offices, including the state secretariat. This decision serves as a testament to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s homage to the late minister and his colleague. July 22 marks the birthday of both Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the late minister Ajit Pawar. While we often see politicians celebrating their birthdays with great fanfare, Devendra Fadnavis instead chose to mark this day to commemorate the late Ajit Pawar’s birthday. Fadnavis’s unprecedented act of allowing his birthday to be officially recognized as the late minister’s birthday has endeared him to millions.

Stories range from professional spats, and banters between ‘Dada’ and ‘Bhau’

In the political history of Maharashtra, the friendship between Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar has always been a subject of keen interest. Despite ideological differences and belonging to opposing parties, there existed a strong, unspoken bond of friendship between the two leaders. Despite their first coalition in that early-morning swearing-in ceremony of 2019 had failed, the incident planted seeds of mutual trust & understanding and future partnerships between the two leaders. Later, during the Mahayuti governments this understanding paved the way for friendship. Ajit Pawar was known for his discipline and brisk pace of work, while Devendra Fadnavis was recognized for his studious approach. During the cabinet meetings of the Mahayuti governments, there would often be light-hearted moments. Ajit Pawar would sarcastically tell Devendra Fadnavis, “Devendra-ji, your study of the files is excellent, but please clear our files as quickly as possible!” In turn, Devendra-ji would also throw a witty reply back to Ajit Dada. Despite fiercely criticizing each other inside the House, the two were often seen conversing amicably outside the chamber or in the lobby, discussing subjects far removed from politics.

New culture in Maharashtra politics

This move has taken Maharashtra’s political culture beyond vindictiveness or hatred and given tolerance and mutual respect a chance. While power and positions in political life are transient, honoring those who have dedicated their lives to the soil of Maharashtra creates a new tradition in the state’s political culture. It is the good fortune of Maharashtra’s political landscape to have a leader like Devendra Fadnavis who knows how to blend friendship in politics and promote goodwill while in competition.
