The Devendra Fadnavis government has taken a crucial decision to rescue the state’s farmers from financial distress and alleviate the burden of debt and outstanding bills weighing on them. The Chief Minister has announced the complete waiver of electricity bills amounting to ₹48,000 crore for the state’s farmers. The government took this step with the aim of reducing agricultural distress and enabling farmers to live with dignity. This decision ensures the complete settlement of outstanding electricity bills for lakhs of farmers across the state.
Electricity Bill Waiver Alongside Farm Loan Waiver 2026
Several Maharashtra Farmers’ welfare schemes have been implemented by the government to give the farmers major relief from debts. In addition to the farmers’ electricity bill waiver 2026, the government also implemented the ‘Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar Loan Liberation Scheme.’ Initially, the scheme required farmers to repay their existing loans themselves. However, considering the farmers’ plight and challenges, the Devendra Fadnavis government decided to waive this debt for farmers who are regularly repaying their loans yet facing hardship. By simultaneously granting electricity bill waiver and full loan waivers, the government has prioritized the welfare of farmers above all else. This brings immense relief to lakhs of the state’s ‘Annadatas’ (food producers), freeing them from paying a large amount of outstanding electricity bills from running of irrigation pumps. These initiatives have emerged as the most significant Maharashtra farmer welfare scheme of 2026.
Government to Allocate Funds in the Budget
Following Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s decision to waive outstanding electricity bills for pumps with a capacity of up to 7.5 horsepower, electricity company employees will no longer visit farmers to collect these dues. This has brought significant relief to the farmers. Notably, the MSEDCL will not absorb the cost of this waiver entirely; the state government will provide the necessary funds from its budget.
Devendra Fadnavis’s Farmers’ Electricity Bill Waivers Scheme
Granting electricity bill waivers or concessions to farmers in Maharashtra is not new. Devendra Fadnavis had previously extended substantial concessions on electricity bills for farmers’ help during his earlier tenure. A look at the history of such concessions and waivers reveals that, against the backdrop of the 2004 assembly elections, the then-government announced free electricity for farmers; however, the scheme could not be sustained due to certain technical and financial reasons. Subsequently, during Fadnavis’s term as Chief Minister from 2014 to 2019, the ‘Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana‘ (Chief Minister’s Solar Agriculture Feeder Scheme) was launched, enabling farmers to access electricity during the day at affordable rates. Additionally, waivers on interest and penalties amounting to thousands of crores of rupees were granted (under an interest subsidy scheme). Later, the ‘Krishi Urja Policy’ (Agricultural Energy Policy) was implemented, which offered up to a 50% discount on outstanding electricity bills.
The current electricity bill waiver, announced in 2026 and valued at ₹48,000 crore, will bring major relief to farmers. Simultaneously, the government’s initiative to provide farmers with free, reliable daytime electricity via solar energy is proving beneficial. These measures are truly helping Maharashtra’s farmers to remain debt-free and worry-free.
