LNK Energy’s ₹10,000 Crore Solar Investment in Sambhaji Nagar!

The demand for renewable energy in India is soaring high on the back of the country’s rapid industrialization drive, focus on data center propagation, and target for zero carbon emission. Maharashtra, being the most industrialized state, has taken the onus of leading the country in green energy self-reliance. In the presence of CM Devendra Fadnavis, an MoU was signed between the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) and LNK Energy to set up a 6 GW backward integrated solar module manufacturing plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Marathwada. This will be an integrated manufacturing facility starting from ingot to wafer to solar module production, spread over 60 acres of land in the Shendra and Bidkin industrial zones of the Aurangabad (Sambhajinagar) Industrial City (Auric). For now the plant will have an annual throughput that can generate 6 GW solar power. This plant, which will bring more self-reliance in solar module production in India, will be the first project of LNK Energy’s Rs 10000 crore investment plan in Maharashtra over the next five years.

The founders of LNK Energy bring with them long experience across large-scale manufacturing, supply-chain development, renewable energy and institutional capital deployment. The plant promises to produce top quality solar modules with reduced dependence on import of raw materials and contribute to the green energy revolution of India. The plant is expected to directly employ nearly 2500 people and create indirect employment of another 2000 people.

Why is this plant critical for Maharashtra and India

A major goal of the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Swadeshi 2.0 initiatives is to achieve self-reliance in green energy generation, which is a solution for India’s over-dependency on fossil fuel imports and an important step towards minimizing carbon emissions from the country. However, there are many obstacles to realizing this ambition—the major ones being:

  1. High import dependence for generation and storage components
  2. Technology dependence on foreign companies
  3. Bottlenecks in distribution infrastructure
  4. Limited recycling infrastructure

From the above perspective, the integrated solar energy platform by LNK Energy in Auric is a crucial step forward as it will set up its own production line for multiple components of the solar energy value chain to help reduce import of components for solar panel production in the country. The company’s ambitious target will also include renewable power generation, energy storage solutions, electric mobility infrastructure, and smart energy management using a single digital and operational framework for optimizing consumption and improving efficiency. This model will allow customers, including industries, commercial users, and utilities, to access a unified ecosystem that combines generation, storage, monitoring, and analytics for better energy planning and cost management.

While the initial agreement for the Rs 4700 crore solar module production line was signed in Mumbai in August 2025, the extended parts of the Rs 10000 crore project has been signed at the recently concluded Davos Economic Conclave. This will include the company’s forthcoming initiatives in other renewable energies like green hydrogen & fuels, hybrid power(solar+storage) generation, and battery storage solution for higher grid reliability. This broader vision will drive environmentally friendly industrialization in Maharashtra and generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for local people. While the city of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar will emerge as a major industrial and clean energy hub in South Asia, this project will give a new impetus to Maharashtra’s economic development.
