India has taken decisive steps towards becoming a major center for international higher education by 2030, with a focus on driving its knowledge economy. Maharashtra government under the visionary CM Devendra Fadnavis has taken the lead by launching a massive global education initiative in Navi Mumbai.
Thanks to the National Education Policy 2020 and subsequent reforms in higher education, foreign universities are now looking to establish direct presence in India. The ‘Navi Mumbai EduCity’—an international educational hub currently being developed in Navi Mumbai with the assistance of CIDCO—will start new eras, firstly as an arm for renowned foreign universities and then as a destination for Indian as well as international students.
Through Memorandums of Understanding signed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, five renowned educational institutions from across the globe—the University of Aberdeen (Scotland), the University of York (UK), the University of Western Australia (Australia), the Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), and the Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy)—have expressed their interest to establish campuses in Navi Mumbai. Besides saving significant cost for the Indian students aspiring to earn the eminent foreign university degrees, the EduCity project will attract a large number of foreign students as well, giving a new identity for Mumbai and Navi Mumbai on the global educational map.
The University of Connecticut to Assist in Developing the ‘EduCity’ in India
On March 1, 2025, Governor of Connecticut Ned Lamont and his delegation called on the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai and discussed the proposed ‘EduCity’ project in Navi Mumbai. The U.S. state of Connecticut will provide assistance in establishing this educational hub. During the meeting, the Chief Minister stated that the proposed EduCity would be situated in close proximity to the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The location is blessed with an international airport, a nearby sea port, and highways; and now with the metro network also expanding, it will be just ideal for a game changing project like this.
Every year a few lakhs of Indian students enroll in foreign universities for higher education, and several more suppress their aspiration for lack of financial support. The cost associated with foreign education is substantial and puts the parents under constant pressure. The Navi Mumbai EduCity promises to change this scenario, as Indian students will soon have access to world-class undergraduate and postgraduate programs by renowned foreign universities at their campuses situated in Navi Mumbai, and at a significantly lower cost. The focus will be to offer ug/pg courses more on relevant and futuristic disciplines like STEM, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Fashion Design, and Advanced Engineering. This endeavour will further enrich the pool of high-skilled labor in India to encourage more FDI inflows into the country. Navi Mumbai has begun its journey to become the next ‘Global Knowledge City.’
And that is not all! The government has other plans as well with Navi Mumbai, such as developing a ‘Medi-City,’ a ‘Sports City,’ and an ‘Innovation City.’ Navi Mumbai’s advantages, like an abundance of land and advanced infrastructure, including the Atal Setu, the upcoming international airport, and metro corridors, make it an ideal choice for such ambitious projects to realize visions like a $1 trillion economy for the state and ‘Developed India 2047.’ When the Edu City projects are completed, with the campuses of multiple global universities in one large place and students of many cultures, religions, and countries assembled, it will be like a mini world manifesting the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family). Under the leadership of Fadnavis, a sea of prosperity is awaiting Navi Mumbai.
