Construction of nearly 337 km of Mumbai Metro is underway in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) area, spreading over 14 lines with 225 stations. At present, 3 lines of the Mumbai Metro, covering 46.5 km, are operational in full swing, which include:
- Metro 1, the 11.4 km line from Versova to Ghatkopar,
- Metro 2 Phase A, the 18.6 km line from Dahisar East to DN Nagar, and
- Metro 7, the 16.5 km line from Dahisar East to Gundavli.
Notwithstanding the complex, time-consuming, and expensive projects of metro rails, which also require strong political will, the decision for the expansion of Mumbai Metro with 10 new routes was made by Devendra Fadnavis during his 1st term as the CM. Except for Metro 1, from Ghatkopar to Versova, all other corridors were studied, planned, and permitted during Devendra Fadnavis’s tenure, giving him a new adjective, ‘Metro Man.’ Most of the lines permitted during his tenure have been completed or are at the final stages, while the rest will be completed in phases in the next two to three years. Let’s have a look at the current status of all the metro line projects that are currently under construction and those that have been completed, as shared by the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis himself in the recently concluded 2025 budget session.
- The Metro 2 Phase A line, launched on January 19, 2023, is expected to be completed by December 2025. Work on the Metro 2 Phase B line is also underway and is expected to be completed by October 2026.
- 95% of the work on the Metro 3 (Colaba to Seepz) line has been completed. It has also been successfully tested. This route is about 33 km long and is the largest underground metro project in the country. The metro line from Cuffe Parade to Seepz will start in June 2025.
- 80% of the work on Metro 4 (Bhakti Park-Wadala-Thane-Kasarwadavali) has been completed. The metro line between Kasarwadavali and Cadbury Junction will start in December 2025. The Cadbury Junction to Gandhinagar route will be completed by December 2026, and the Gandhinagar to Bhakti Park, Wadala route will be completed by November 2027. The Kasarwadavali to Gaymukh route has also been completed up to 88%, and the rest will be completed by December 2025 to start the operation.
- The work of Metro 5 (Kapoorbadi-Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan) is going on in two phases. The work of the Thane to Bhiwandi phase is 80% complete. On the other side, the work on the 5 km Bhiwandi-Kalyan underground route is currently stalled and under study, as the rehabilitation of the affected residents has to be decided first.
- The Metro 6 (Swami Samarthanagar to Vikhroli-Kanjurmarg) line is 78% complete and is expected to be operational by December 2026.
- The Metro 7 (Gundavali to Overipada) line was operational in 2023 itself.
- The Metro 7A (Dahisar to Mira-Bhayander) line is also 95% complete and will be operational by December 2025. The Andheri to Mumbai Airport line is 55% complete and will be operational by December 2026.
- Work on the Metro 10 (Gaymukh to Shivaji Chowk) line has not yet started. The work on technical permits for this line is in the final stage.
- Only 6% of the work on the Metro 12 (Kalyan to Taloja) line has been completed so far. Some difficulties have arisen in this line.
The above updates show the work of Mumbai Metro in the MMRDA region is going on in full swing, with their completion dates expectedly occurring in 2025, 2026, or 2027 at the latest. Once all these lines are operational, Mumbai will boast one of the largest metro networks in the world, with a reach to all corners of the city, making commuting between central, western, and harbor lines a breeze.
