The final phase of Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), a completely underground 33.5 km corridor that will add a new dimension to Mumbai’s public transport, was inaugurated on Wednesday, 8 October 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With this last section of the Aqua Line, stretching between Acharya Atre Chowk (Vile Parle Naka) and Cuffe Parade, now opened, it makes the Metro Line 3 completely available for public use, enabling people to travel from Aarey to Cuffe Parade in 56 minutes, entirely underground.
Metro Line 3 has a total of 27 stations, of which 26 are underground, with fares ranging from Rs 10 to 70. The line will be able to carry 1.3 million passengers daily. Eight-car trains running every five minutes will transport 72,000 passengers per hour. There will be 280 services on the line each day. The first section, Aarey to BKC, covering 12.69 km, was inaugurated on 7 October 2024. The second section, BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk (Vile Parle Naka), began operations on 9 May 2025, and the third section, Acharya Atre Chowk (Vile Parle Naka) to Cuffe Parade, started on 8 October 2025. The total cost of Mumbai Metro Line 3 was Rs. 37,276 crore, which was funded through a joint partnership between the central government, the Maharashtra government, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), and MMRCL (Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited). This is a milestone achievement by the Devendra Fadnavis government toward providing Mumbaikars with a comfortable, faster, and environmentally friendly rapid transit system.
“Mumbai One” app launched for hassle-free commuting across all transport modes
Alongside inaugurating the last phase of Mumbai Metro Line-3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ambitious “Mumbai One” app that promises to revolutionize travel across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. It is India’s first integrated common mobility app, bringing together eleven public transport providers across the Mumbai metro area on a single digital platform. This means commuters will no longer need to buy separate tickets each time they switch from one mode of transport to another between metro, local train, monorail, or bus within the MMR.
The platform integrates Mumbai Metro lines (1, 2A, 3 [Aqua Line], and 7), Navi Mumbai Metro, Mumbai Monorail, Mumbai local trains, BEST buses, Thane Municipal Transport (TMT), Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT), Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT), and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT).
With Mumbai One, travel within the MMRDA area will be faster and easier. A single QR code can be used across different transport options, eliminating the need to stand in lines for tickets. The app is expected to play a major role in enabling commuters to reach anywhere in Mumbai via any mode of transport within 59 minutes.
