Pune Metro: A new era of advanced urban transport
The city of Pune, soaked in history and culture, also gained prominence for its manufacturing, automobile, IT, and education industries, leading to a rapid increase in population and intra-city commuting. Pune Metro Rail was introduced as a rapid transit system to help with the significant daily traffic jams in various parts of the city, ranked among the most congested cities globally. As a fast, reliable, and efficient means to move large numbers of people between the twin cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune Metro Rail greatly reduced traffic stress on the road and pollution level by offering a much more convenient, comfortable, and economical alternative to the commuters. In line with the city’s need for a modern transportation system to accelerate its growth and the social and economic development of its people, the state-of-the-art Pune Metro came into existence due to the constant development push by Metro Man Devendra Fadnavis under the aegis of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This timeline reflects the center-state cooperative efforts, from prioritizing acquisitions of funds and lands to solving many disputes, to speed up the completion of this landmark infrastructure project.
