Devendra Fadnavis, the driving force behind the spate of progress and development that Maharashtra has been witnessing for more than a decade now, is often addressed by names that reflect his profound contributions to the development of vital sectors in the state. For example, Devendra Fadnavis is popularly referred to as ‘Metro Man’ for his pivotal role in expanding the metro network in MMR, Nagpur, and Pune to step up urbanization and smart city facilities with the Rapid Transit System.
During his 1st term as CM, he made concrete plans and obtained permission to expand the Mumbai Metro all over the MMR region with 337 km metro corridors, and also started Metro projects in Nagpur and Pune, ensuring the flow of funds from the center and through loans to finish them fast. While the metro project in Nagpur became the first Green Metro project in the country, the Mumbai Metro lines, some of which are already operational, were upgraded for higher speed.
During the Congress-NCP government, only 11 km of metro lines were built in 11 years. But Devendra Fadnavis, in just 5 years, made significant advancements in spreading metro, not only mere announcements but also time-bound implementation. Despite his busy schedule throughout the recent years, whether as the LOP, Dy. CM, or CM, Devendra Fadnavis never shifts his focus from the speedy execution of the metro projects; rather gets directly involved in every aspect of it, from fundraising to applying the right and up-to-date technology to allocating land for metro loco sheds, convenience for the commuters, rehabilitation of the affected people, and so on.
