Nagpur Metro: A new chapter in the urban transport revolution
Nagpur is the winter capital of Maharashtra, a fast-growing metropolis, and the third largest city in Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. With an area of 217.6 sq. km. and the population of nearly 47 lakh, Nagpur Metropolitan Area is the 13th largest urban conglomeration in India. Located at the geographical center of the country, the city is experiencing a major development push by the government, which is expected to increase its population and the need for modern transport facilities. Sensing this ensuing need of the city, the government introduced Nagpur Metro, a rapid transit system inaugurated in 2019 and an important milestone in the efforts to transform Nagpur into a ‘smart city’ under the leadership of Metro Man, CM Devendra Fadnavis.
The Nagpur Metro, serving as the second Metro network in Maharashtra, provides a fast, safe, and eco-friendly mode of transportation, enhancing the city’s status. This project is being executed in two stages, with the first phase began operation in March 2019. The two color-coded lines, Orange and Aqua, link Nagpur city from east to west and north to south, alleviating the strain on the city’s road transport network and offering residents a speedy, comfortable, and cost-effective travel solution. Moreover, the metro is also contributing to lowering pollution levels and promoting the green development of Nagpur. The total cost of this project was Rs 8,680 crore. The work on the second phase of Nagpur Metro has also started at a fast pace.

The Central Government had sent a letter on 16 January 2023 regarding the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Central Government, the State Government and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited as per the terms and conditions of the Central Government. Accordingly, the State Government approved the draft of this tripartite Memorandum of Understanding. As per the agreement, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) will develop the land around the phase 2 project, acquired from the local authorities and the government / semi-government institutions. This will generate additional revenue to partially offset the high cost of the project, primarily by selling or leasing the developed land at higher prices for commercial development, leveraging the increased property value near metro stations. Also, if the expenditure increases beyond what is indicated in the project report, it will be mandatory to get its approval from the Finance Department.

Nagpur Metro
As the common experience goes, the Nagpur Metro is bound to create many positive impacts on the lives and commerce of the people living in and around the city. The project supports two primary goals: (i) addressing climate change by encouraging a transition from road transport to rail, which will lead to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions; and (ii) fostering social and economic infrastructure by playing a significant role in urban growth, thus enhancing the business landscape for private sector expansion and improving access to services and employment opportunities. The role of Metro Man Devendra Fadnavis has been crucial in making this ambitious project a reality. Due to his vision and effective leadership, Nagpur Metro is making rapid progress, starting from its conception to what it is now and what it will be after the project completion, making a transition towards becoming a smart city.
