Pune Metro: A new era of advanced urban transport

Pune Metro: A new era of advanced urban transport

The city of Pune, soaked in history and culture, also gained prominence for its manufacturing, automobile, IT, and education industries, leading to a rapid increase in population and intra-city commuting. Pune Metro Rail was introduced as a rapid transit system to help with the significant daily traffic jams in various parts of the city, ranked among the most congested cities globally. As a fast, reliable, and efficient means to move large numbers of people between the twin cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune Metro Rail greatly reduced traffic stress on the road and pollution level by offering a much more convenient, comfortable, and economical alternative to the commuters. In line with the city’s need for a modern transportation system to accelerate its growth and the social and economic development of its people, the state-of-the-art Pune Metro came into existence due to the constant development push by Metro Man Devendra Fadnavis under the aegis of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This timeline reflects the center-state cooperative efforts, from prioritizing acquisitions of funds and lands to solving many disputes, to speed up the completion of this landmark infrastructure project.

Approval for two new stations, Balajinagar and Bibwewadi

The state cabinet has approved the construction of two stations, Balajinagar and Bibwewadi, on the Swargate to Katraj metro line of the Pune Metro. To connect the Katraj Metro Station with the neighboring PMPML Bus Station, the metro station will have to be shifted approximately 421 meters southwards. This transfer has also been approved. With the construction of these two new metro stations, the length of the tunnel has increased by about 421 meters. To meet this expense, the state cabinet has sanctioned an additional cost of Rs 683 crore 11 lakh. Mahametro will have to pay Rs 227 crore 42 lakh to Pune Municipal Corporation for this work. The Cabinet has also approved loans and other arrangements to raise the balance.

Loan sanctioned for Pune Metro Line 2

The state government has already approved the Pimpri-Chinchwad to Nigdi Metro Rail Corridor, Swargate to Katraj Metro Rail Corridor, Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi Metro Corridor (Vithalwadi), Pune Metro Line 4 (Khadkwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi), and Null Stop Warje-Manikbagh (sub-route) metro projects. The decision to take loans as per their terms & conditions for these projects was approved in a State Cabinet meeting. Bilateral and multilateral loans at low interest rates will be taken within the approved limits for these projects. It was also decided in the meeting that the government will become the guarantor, as required, to get the loans.
