In Nagpur district, the innovative Sanjeevani Yojana, initiated by the state government and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to provide e-rickshaws to the persons with disabilities, has greatly improved the lives of the differently-abled citizens. Through this scheme, a total of 755 e-rickshaws have been distributed to persons with disabilities, in a move to empower them with self-reliance and economic independence.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kalyan Yojana, 755 e-rickshaws, street food carts and essential items have been distributed to provide self-employment opportunities to disabled people in Nagpur district. The Nagpur Divyang e-rickshaw scheme was launched on March 2, 2025 with distribution of 200 e-rickshaws. The remaining 555 were distributed in the concluding phase held on October 19, 2025. Apart from this, a total of 6,334 bicycles were distributed to Anganwadi and Asha workers in the district to help them with their work. Electric rickshaws are environment friendly and very effective for local passenger transport. The Devendra Fadnavis government had introduced the e-rickshaw policy in Maharashtra for the first time, in 2016. The objective of this policy was to introduce eco-friendly local travel that could replace the traditional cycle rickshaws and become a regular source of income for unemployed people, including women and disabled, thereby empowering the poor and vulnerable citizens of the society.

What is the Divyang E-Rickshaw Scheme?

The Devendra Fadnavis government introduced an e-rickshaw policy in 2016, which later paved the way for some government empowerment schemes for women and the persons with disabilities. In 2024, the ‘Divyang E-Rickshaw’ scheme was launched in Maharashtra. The objective of this scheme was to make persons with disabilities self-reliant by providing them with free e-rickshaws. These e-rickshaws are battery-driven, easy to operate, safe, and economical, besides being environmentally friendly.

What is the eligibility criteria for the Divyang E-Rickshaw Scheme?

A permanent resident of Maharashtra with at least 40% disability and holding a disability certificate is eligible to apply for this scheme. The applicant must be between 18 and 55 years of age and their family income must be within Rs 2.5 L – 3 L per annum. Furthermore, the applicant must not have previously availed the benefits of any similar government scheme. Applicants are required to submit documents such as an Aadhaar card, proof of residence, disability certificate, proof of income, a passport-sized photograph, and bank account details along with their application.

Realizing Dr. Ambedkar’s Vision

Overall, the schemes launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for marginalised and vulnerable people aim to do more than just providing aid or relief but empowering them to live with self-respect. The state government is making concerted efforts at various levels to accomplish this. Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar created the Indian Constitution with a hope that the fruits of development must reach the most marginalized sections of society. Underlying this was a profound vision of inclusivity, empowerment, and equal opportunity for the backward class and lower strata people. Recognizing the large gap between the privileged and marginalized of the society even in the present day scenario, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has endeavored to uplift their conditions through the implementation of several schemes. His initiatives to ensure justice, opportunities, and progress for the poor and marginalized are seen as sincere efforts to put Dr. Babasaheb’s vision into practice in the present day.

10 Million Women to Become ‘Lakhpati Didis’

The ‘Lakhpati Didi’ concept has been implemented in the state to economically empower women. Through this scheme, 5 million women in the state have already become self-reliant. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has pledged to transform 10 million women into ‘Lakhpati Didis’ in the future. Another scheme, The ‘Pink E-Rickshaw’ scheme, launched to provide income opportunities for women, is another initiative towards fulfilling this commitment. Under this scheme, financial assistance is being provided to women in Mumbai suburbs, Pune, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Nashik, and other urban areas to purchase e-rickshaws, enabling them to earn an independent livelihood. The social justice policies of the Devendra Fadnavis government place special emphasis on extending the benefits of schemes not only to urban areas but also to rural regions and Scheduled Communities. To ensure that the Mang-Garudi and other marginalized communities in Nagpur district benefit from various government schemes, camps were organized at every settlement to issue identity cards to them. This initiative by the state government is making the benefits of schemes like the ‘Ramai Gharkul Yojana’ accessible to people from marginalized sections of society.

On this occasion, documents for agricultural land were handed over to several beneficiaries under the ‘Karmveer Dadasaheb Gaikwad Swabhiman and Sashaktikaran Yojana,’ a move proving crucial for their financial security.
