Maharashtra’s drive to implement the PLI-Auto scheme is a recent example of the same. According to data at the end of March 2026, Maharashtra leads India in implementing the central government’s PLI-Auto Scheme with 66 established approved manufacturing units (out of 225 units nationwide), to boost local manufacturing of advanced automotive technology based automobiles and components. This initiative of the state, as a result of proactive industrial policy and infrastructure push under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis, has successfully attracted major investments to the state.

Of the total 225 units, 66 units are in Maharashtra alone.

Maharashtra has emerged as the leading State in PLI (Production Linked Incentive Scheme) implementation for the new-age automobiles and components industries, surpassing other industrially advanced states like Haryana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Of the total 225 approved manufacturing units established in the country since the launch of the scheme, 66 units have been established in Maharashtra alone. This is a testament to the industry-friendly environment, transparent policies and advanced infrastructure created in Maharashtra under Devendra Fadnavis. The Union Heavy Industries Minister gave this information in the Lok Sabha while replying to a question raised in this regard. The scheme was launched by the Central Government in September 2021 to promote advanced technology and local manufacturing in the automobile sector. The central government had also made a provision of Rs 25,938 crore in the budget for this scheme. Devendra Fadnavis government took full advantage of this to boost the eco-system for the green automobiles and components manufacturing in the state and attract investments for the same. The Central Government did not offer any special concession to any state for this scheme. Although the scheme was applicable for the entire country, a focused approach made Maharashtra surpass the contenders by big margins.

Creation of more than 67,820 jobs across the country

Due to the competitiveness and PLI initiatives of Maharashtra, huge investment and employment opportunities have been generated in the state and the country. The PLI -Auto scheme, so far, has brought Rs 44,326 crore investment to the country and created more than 67,820 employment opportunities. A large number of these jobs will happen in Maharashtra. Due to the continuous efforts of Devendra Fadnavis government, the Make in Maharashtra initiatives have started bearing fruits. This will further strengthen the eco-systems of ancillary industries and small suppliers in the state.

What is the PLI-Auto Scheme?

The PLI-Auto Scheme is the Production Linked Incentive Scheme of the Central Government. It has been launched primarily to promote domestic manufacturing of Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT) based Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs). The scheme aims to enhance supply chain resilience and reduce cost disabilities. After the approval by the Union Cabinet on 15 September 2021, the scheme was officially notified on 23 September 2021. After that, the scheme was implemented only for the next 5 years starting from April 1, 2022. Under the PLI-Auto scheme, financial incentives for approved companies range from 13% to 18% (in the form of cashback on sales value) for OEMs and 8% to 18% cashback on sales value for component makers with conditions. However, companies must achieve a minimum 50 percent Domestic Value Addition (DVA) to qualify for financial incentives. The primary focus of this scheme is to encourage manufacture of electric and hydrogen fuel cell , as well as their spare parts.vehicles.

Objective of the PLI-Auto Scheme

The primary objective of this scheme is to promote manufacturing of electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, as well as their spare parts in India. This initiative will make India a manufacturing hub for globally competitive advanced automobiles and reduce carbon emission significantly.

To promote the production of Advanced Automotive Technology based vehicles, such as electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

To manufacture such vehicles and their components in India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, rather than importing them from abroad.

To attract both domestic and global automobile companies to set up manufacturing units in India.

To establish new factories and research centers.

To create lakhs of new direct and indirect employment opportunities within the country.

To transform India into a hub for automobile manufacturing and a key player in the global supply chain.

Overall, thanks to Devendra Fadnavis’s capable leadership and economic strategy, Maharashtra has put its focus on manufacturing of advanced green technology based vehicles and their components in the state, which will not only help the country to achieve its net-zero greenhouse gas emission target, but will also capture the huge export potentials for such vehicles. With this foresight, fierce competitiveness, and the best use of opportunities, Maharashtra under the Fadnavis government is holding the leadership position in new-age industries.

Related articles:

Maharashtra’s 17 MoUs: investments of Rs. 34 thousand crores in Maharashtra with the creation of over 33,000 jobs

Under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis, investment of Rs 42,892 crore and creation of 25,892 jobs in the state

Maharashtra has always been an industrially advanced state, but from 2014 onwards, it has increasingly…

[75

post-14655","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-good-governance
["GET
