India is aiming to be among the frontline countries to adopt AI in agriculture, with Maharashtra leading the way. On Feb 22 and 23, the Government of Maharashtra hosted a flagship event called ‘AI4Agri 2026’ at the JIO World Convention Centre in Mumbai. This was the inaugural edition of this global conference & investor summit to discuss the use of responsible AI, frontier digital, and emerging technologies to drive agricultural transformation and inspire international collaboration and large-scale investment in AgriTech solutions. The summit, designed as a global knowledge-exchange platform, saw participation of international experts in AI, agriculture, climate resilience, digital public infrastructure, investment, and development practice, along with senior policymakers. Against the backdrop of increasing incidents of crop damage, productivity loss, and farming woes across the globe, this pioneering move by Maharashtra has special significance and potential to become a niche platform for addressing the global agricultural issues using AI and related technologies.

Behind the AI4Agri 2026 initiative is the Maharashtra Agricultural-Artificial Intelligence Policy 2025-29. Maharashtra under CM Devendra Fadnavis has taken a proactive and resolute approach towards the integration of AI to drive development. The MahaAgri-AI policy is made to formulate and implement the state’s AI strategy for agriculture, moving from district-wise pilot projects to statewide deployments of farmer-centric solutions. In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s India AI Mission, this policy is aimed at promoting the practical use of AI across the agriculture value chain, and developing a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to create and share a robust and secure data backbone for support. The AI4Agri 2026 conference gave the state government valuable insights and directions, which will significantly influence the strategy adoption and administrative decision-making to achieve the target results.

This conference highlighted various digital and AI-based applications that will allow farmers to confidently access digital services, communicate in their own languages, and find answers to their farming-related questions; simultaneously, it also provided the state with opportunities to network with universities, institutions, experts, and entrepreneurs in agriculture to develop and implement appropriate policies for farming and farmers.

The Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), which is a critical part of the Maharashtra Agricultural-Artificial Intelligence Policy 2025-29, has components, such as MahaVistar AI platform, MahaAgriX, AI-enabled Traceability and Transparency tools, AI-enabled geospatial intelligence engine.

Mahavistar AI platform is an AI-powered digital mobile app, which serves as a personal digital assistant for every farmer. Through this platform, more than 3 million farmers, as of date, have received accurate weather forecasts, pest control information, and benefited from government schemes. The government has placed special emphasis on voice-based features to reach farmers irrespective of their locations. Farmers can ask questions and receive guidance in their mother tongue. Specifically to help the tribal communities, the government has truly democratized technology by using a large language model in Bhili. In future versions in other tribal languages are also going to be available.

MahaAgX (Maharashtra Agriculture Data Exchange) is a unified, secure, consent-driven, and interoperable platform that integrates a large number of datasets to provide AI-driven insights on land, crops, and market prices. Recognizing that the effectiveness of AI systems depends on the quality of available data base, the state government has established the Maha Agridata Exchange. Information has been integrated by connecting agricultural universities and various government departments in the state with national organizations like AgriStack. With the help of renowned organizations like IIT Bombay and ICAR, a computer vision system was developed that helps identify crop diseases and pests. This database will be shared with the other states as well to help with the country’s AI mission for agriculture.

The conference also saw some crucial agreements signed between the Maharashtra government and the World Bank, EkStep Foundation, and the world-renowned Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands. These agreements will provide a major boost to integrating advanced AI in the state’s agriculture sector to help with advanced plant hybridization, quality seed development, and for creating various types of data-bases. Furthermore, using advanced technologies like QR codes, RFID, and blockchain to monitor food safety, quality, sustainability, and the entire supply chain will enhance the export potential of Maharashtra’s farm produces and increase their demand in the global market. Apart from that, the Maharashtra government is also actively empowering women-led agritech startups and providing specialized fellowships to youth to foster innovation, improve agricultural productivity, and create sustainable rural livelihoods. This initiative, highlighted in the Maharashtra Startup, Entrepreneurship & Innovation Policy 2025.

The Maharashtra government, led by the visionary CM Fadnavis, has embarked on a mission to optimize every sector in the state, including agriculture, by applying responsible AI and other technologies. The formation of the Maharashtra Agriculture-Artificial Intelligence Policy 2025-2029 and the recently held AI4Agri2026 Global Summit are the steps towards harnessing advanced AI for agriculture. Just like a teacher guides their students, AI can guide farmers in every stage of their journey to make their efforts profitable and boost the rural economy.

Related articles:

Devendra Fadnavis government’s new scheme for agricultural infrastructure development in Maharashtra

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a massive leap in civilization, which is all set to…

[93,88

post-13333","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-farmers-leader","category-tech-savvy
["GET
