After the Lok Sabha, Assembly, and the municipality elections, the entire state’s eyes were fixed on the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections of 2026, especially the Mumbai Municipal Corporation election. The Mahayuti partners BJP and the ShivSena produced an extraordinary performance, clinching 23 out of the total 29 municipal corporations in the state, demonstrating peoples’ unwavering faith and confidence in the Mahayuti government.

This victory, besides establishing the Bhartiya Janta Party as the number one political party in Maharashtra, reflects the altered political landscapes in key cities like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, and Pimpri-Chinchwad to clearly define the direction of future politics in the state. And what has made this victory even more significant is the earlier speculation that the coming together of the two Thackeray brothers would pose a big challenge for the BJP! In Mumbai, the BJP secured 89 seats, effectively deciding the Mumbai mayoral race through its alliance. In Pune, it gained a clear majority by winning 118 out of 165 seats, and in Pimpri-Chinchwad, it secured 84 out of 128 seats. Electing the BJP and the Mahayuti with such emphatic margin, the people of Maharashtra has sided strongly with the stability and development and rejected the experiments of unity between the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party in Pune, has failed.

The BJP is the largest party in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation

In the Mumbai Municipal Corporation election that decides the control for the country’s oldest and richest municipal body, the BJP has emerged as the single largest party to win the polls. The mahayuti alliance of BJP (with 89 wards) and Shiv Sena (with 29 wards) is finally in control of the BMC. By uniting together, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, since they have nothing much to offer, took up a strategy of fanning the Marathi identity sentiments. However, Mumbaikars prioritized development over parochial politics. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s persona and development-centric approach surpassed the success of 2017. We have hoisted our flag in these municipal corporations: Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Mira Bhayandar, Ulhasnagar, Panvel, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Ichalkaranji, Sangli Miraj Kupwad, Kolhapur, Solapur, Nagpur, Akola, Amravati, Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Jalna, Nanded Waghala, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

Devendra Fadnavis’s Meticulous Strategy

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s meticulous election strategy has always been instrumental in BJP’s election successes in the state and was no different this time around as well. Individual strategies for the local body elections were devised well in advance after the success in the assembly elections. We have seen his election astuteness many times before, in terms of candidate selection, picking the right strategies for individual local bodies or constitutions, and so on, which poses a significant challenge to the opposition. The BJP’s victory in the Shiv Sena stronghold like Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar has come as the biggest surprise of this election. The BJP’s invigorating performance turned the table in this Shiv Sena fort, delivering a shock to the complacent Sena(UBT) leaders. Also, remarkable was the BJP’s performance in Vasai-Virar, which saw a significant rise in seats from 1 in 2017 to 43 in 2026, despite Hitendra Thakur’s Bahujan Vikas Aghadi managing to retain its stronghold. This sweeping victory, taking along its Mahayuti ally Shiv Sena, has reinforced the foundation of the BJP as the top political party in Maharashtra.

Regionwise Performances of the BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 1425 out of 2869 seats in the 2026 Municipal Corporation Elections in the state. A region-wise analysis shows that the BJP made strong inroads into the traditional bastions of the oppositions with victories at many places.

MMRDA Municipal Election Results

The BJP performed exceptionally well in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMRDA). It established its dominance in this belt by winning the highest number of seats in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayandar, and Panvel. Notably, the BJP also reached the 50-seat mark in Kalyan-Dombivli, giving tough competition to the Shiv Sena. Although facing a challenge from the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi in Vasai-Virar, the BJP strengthened its position there by winning 43 seats. In the 2017 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party had only one corporator in this region.

Western Maharashtra Election Results

Devendra Fadnavis’s strategy helped BJP achieve memorable victories in Western Maharashtra, a region considered a stronghold of the NCP and Congress. The BJP made significant inroads into Pawar’s bastion, winning 119 out of 165 seats in the Pune Municipal Corporation and 84 out of 128 seats in Pimpri-Chinchwad. In Solapur, where In 2017, the BJP had only 49 corporators, it secured a landslide victory this time, winning 87 out of 102 seats. The BJP has further consolidated its position in Western Maharashtra by winning 39 seats in Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, 26 seats in Kolhapur, and 43 out of 65 seats in the Ichalkaranji Municipal Corporation. In 2017, the BJP had 14 corporators in the Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation; this number has now increased to 25.

North Maharashtra Election Results

The BJP’s dominance continued in North Maharashtra. In this city, which had been a Shiv Sena stronghold for decades, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 57 out of 115 seats. In the Jalna Municipal Corporation as well, the BJP established its dominance by winning 41 out of 65 seats. Latur and Parbhani also saw significant BJP inroads. In the Nanded-Waghala Municipal Corporation, where the BJP had only 6 corporators in 2017, this number has increased to 45 in the current elections.

In the 2026 Municipal corporation Elections, the BJP has unequivocally demonstrated its dominance in state politics by winning 1425 out of the total 2869 seats. From becoming the largest party in Mumbai to securing power independently in major cities like Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik, the BJP’s election game plan outsmarted the opposition. Also, Devendra Fadnavis’s image as the development man and an honest, dynamic, and forward-looking CM created an undercurrent of loyalty shift in the opposition support base. This almost one-sided mandate by the people of Maharashtra in favour of the BJP-led Mahayuti ( 23 out of 29 municipal corporations) is a clear signal that the reins of state politics will remain firmly in the hands of Devendra Fadnavis in the coming years.

Click here to see the party-wise and department-wise results of the 29 municipal corporations.

Related articles:

The tale of Maharashtra’s victory shaped by Devendra Fadnavis’s struggle!

Devendra Fadnavis’s election strategy and leadership once again proved to be masterclass with the BJP…

[77,85,102

post-13115","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-leadership","category-election-winner","category-honest-party-worker
["GET
