Following the train accident in Mumbra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had promised in June to install automatic doors and convert all Mumbai local trains to AC. In line with this, at a Cabinet Infrastructure Committee meeting held in Mumbai, the Chief Minister approved the purchase of 268 new AC local trains for Mumbai under Phases 3 and 3A of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Plan. These trains with automated doors like the Metro coaches will replace the conventional open-door trains in phased manner, and moreover, there might not be any hike in ticket prices to ensure their affordability for the common man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is known for his decisive approach based on clear understanding and an in-depth analysis of a given issue or a situation. And he also takes ownership for the effective implementation of the same. A recent Cabinet Committee meeting on infrastructure held at the Mantralaya on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) saw him take a crucial decision related to the safety and convenience of the millions of commuters who travel daily in Mumbai. This decision was in accordance with his announcement after the recent Mumbai local train accident at Mumbra occurred in June 2025, when five passengers died after falling from a crowded local train near Mumbra railway station. This incident had caused widespread outrage across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concerns were raised about Mumbai’s public transport service, especially the Mumbai suburban rail network after the local train mishap at Mumbra. In response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis proposed the option of installing automatic doors in Mumbai Local trains to enhance passenger safety. However, this option was ridiculed. Undeterred, Devendra Fadnavis engaged the Central Administration and the Railway Ministry to try and find a practical solution. He held talks with the Central Railway Ministry and proposed the purchase of 268 AC local trains under phases 3 and 3A of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). These trains would feature automatic doors similar to those in the metro, air conditioning, and all necessary safety measures for passengers. Importantly, passengers would be charged the same fare for these AC local trains as for regular local trains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chief Minister not only announced this but also followed up with the central government for approval. He had a productive discussion with the Union Railway Minister on this matter. This discussion was not just a formality; the meeting resulted in initial approval from the central government. Subsequently, the state cabinet’s infrastructure committee gave its official approval and sanctioned the purchase of 268 new AC trains in the first phase. The old local trains will be phased out and replaced with new AC trains equipped with automatic doors. This is another example of how Devendra Fadnavis personally gets involved in implementing decisions. Any type of problem, he gets to the root cause of that, engages with the right people, department, or agencies, and arrives at a viable solution from the public interest perspective. Purchasing 268 AC trains for the suburban train services without increasing the ticket fare is a transformative decision that will bring huge comfort and safety for the daily commuters and change the image of Mumbai local train service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
